General & Sectional Appendix Digital Archive

The Appendices available are listed by Railway Company or the British Railways Region or Railtrack Zone that issued them. Just click on the appropriate button below to go to the lists that are of interest to you. The PDFs are supplied strictly “As Is”. The entries in each list will make it clear what is available to download and what is only available on a Research Note CD.

In early days the information nowadays included in General and Sectional Appendices was a part of the railway company rule book. A process of evolution followed with railway companies producing a single Appendix separate from the rule book. The companies were indivualistic and precise content varied between the companies ranging from minimal to highly informative. It was only with the advent of the Grouping that the “Big Four” split the Appendix into 'General' and 'Sectional' publications. Some companies produced separate 'working over' editions as well to cover those portions of another company over which they had running powers. Appendices in a 'uniform' format have been produced since 1960 with the Western Region trialling the style ahead of general introduction on 1 October 1960.

The appendices include a page indicating the origin of the PDF together with links to this web site. If passing copies of a downloaded file to a friend, please leave this page in place. However, please do not pass copies of the CDs around, instead ask interested persons to contact the Society to obtain their own copy. In terms of copyright, British Railways did confirm to the Society some years ago that it was 'not interested' in historical documents that had outlived their operational usefulness and this line seems to have been followed by Railtrack and now Network Rail as may be evidenced by the quantity of modern material that has entered the public domain through eBay and other auction houses, second hand bookstalls and Network Rail's own web site.
