Mike Norris's new book covers the surprising number of private sidings and businesses alongside the Longridge branch, describing the line's numerous signalling installations and goods traffic.
Hardback with 146 pages, 102 photographs, maps and diagrams. Many redrawn by the author.
The line was built primarily for stone traffic from the quarry areas of Longridge, but coal soon became the major traffic that persisted until the lines closure. Unfortunately passenger services ceased in 1930 after a checkered start but may once again return in the future. The book features extensive use of primary source material and contemporary newspaper reports on the many facets of the line.
An ideal reference source for those interested in small branch lines, which at one time could be found all over the country. Demonstrating well, and in some detail the interaction between the railway companies and local industries, including some unexpected surprises, such as the Thirlmere Aqueduct.
Price inclusive of postage within the UK. International buyers are advised to contact the Bookstall before ordering.
