Schedule for Wednesday 20th May 2026:
18.45 Meeting Room opens for general chit chat.
19.00 David Allen, “The Celtic Tiger in Full Flow”
Society member David Allen visited Ireland at a time when the CIE network still languished in a largely unmodernised state, with many delightful features of 'yesteryear' not least a great deal of traditional mechanical signalling and working practices stretching back into history.
David became instantly enamoured and over the ensuing period made many trips to The Emerald Isle, befriending railway staff and recording much of what he saw.
It is fortuitous that David documented this period so comprehensively, for subsequent years saw a massive rationalisation of the network with many lines closed and wholesale modernisation of what remained.
David has assembled a presentation based on his extensive collection of images, focusing especially on the signalling side of things.
Please join us to enjoy David's depiction of a recently lost railway scene.
Supporting David, we are pleased to welcome one of David's many friends from the Irish railway, Oliver Doyle, who will be on hand both to add colour to the story, and to answer any questions which members may wish to ask. Oliver will be introduced on the night, but a brief resume follows: Oliver Doyle is a retired Iarnród Eireann career railwayman. Having joined CIE as a booking clerk at Rosslare Harbour, he held many posts subsequently, including Product Manager for Dublin Suburban; Manager Resources and CTC (Central Traffic Control); and, latterly, Operation Schemes Development Manager. Over the years he has also contributed numerous articles to the Irish Railway Record, the Journal of the Irish Railway Record Society.
21.00 Meeting Room closes.
Times are British Summer Time.
