Guide to this web site

This guide is intended to provide a (fairly) quick overview of the contents of the web site and give clear pointers as to what information is available and where to find it. The site is divided into sections, each accessed from the navigation bar at the top of all the main pages. Each of these sections is discussed in turn below. On may pages there is a floating arrow pointing upwards at the bottom right hand corner of your screen or browser window. Click on it for a quick and simple way to return to the top of the page.

Navigation Bar

The blue bar at the top of the page is your route to accessing the various facilities and resources on this web site. As you pass over each of the section icons and names a list of items will pop into view. Clicking on any of the headings or items in the pop up list will take you straight on to the relevant web page. The navigation bar appears on most pages of this web site but there are exceptions.

For example, on some of the lower level pages the navigation bar is replaced by a 'breadcrumb' trail of the route you have taken from the home page. Each of the steps in the trail is also a clickable link back to the previous levels.

Home Section Home

When you enter our web address in your browser, this is where you arrive.

On this Home Page you will find Society updates and announcements with links to enable you discover more and advertisments for any new Society publications and some authored by members althrough published by others.

Links are provided to pages telling you more about the Society and an invitation to join us as a member. Further links take you to our Guest Book and a facility to search the site.

The Home section Pop-up menu lists various administrative notices, including some statutory ones, and you can inspect a copy of our constitution and rule book. Also here is a list of the awards we make to encourage authors and modellers.

Calendar Section Events and News

This section contains the 'calendar', the Society's diary of events that have been notified to the web master. Typical entries are dates and venue of meetings organised by the Society, our attendance at shows where you can meet some of us at our show stand, and the dates when you come to our document archive, browse and search for information of interest to you.

Archives Section

We hold archives in two forms - original and copy documents which are kept in our research room in Coventry and digital which are made available via our web site. Access to much of the latter is restricted to members as a key membership benefit.

The Pop-up menu is your route to discovering how to access the document archive search room and also a catalogue of our document archive holdings which you can look at on-line to see what we hold that is relevant to your research interests.

Also available here is the route to accessing our digital archive much of which is only accessible to members. Part of our photographic collection is catalogued here as well.

Resources Section

Apart from the link to the Members' Forum, the Pop-up menu gives access to a number ofsignalling and railway operational facts and figures that have been collated together. Many of these records are, sadly, incomplete and we always welcome additional information to fill in the gaps.

One of our on-going work streams is mapping the location of railway signal boxes and the results so far can be accessed on the OS map page.

This section is well worth a visit and spending time to explore!

Membership Section

In this section you will find more about the benefits of joining us as a member, how to join us and, for existing members, how to renew your membership

Sales Section

Here you are able to access our prime sales outlet - The Bookstall - where you can purchase copies of our publications and the signal box diagram drawings that many of our members have produced.

Volunteering Section

Like so many societies, we thrive on volunteers to carry out the various tasks of running the Society. There is a page here explaining this and inviting you to come and help us.

Contact Us Section

What it says on the 'tin'! How to get in touch with us to ask questions or send a message to specific officers.

Disability Aware Section Events and News

Let's be clear, it is not possible for us to cater for the diversity of disability needs of everyone so we have concentrated on a few key ones that relate to eyesight.

Firstly links to other pages and so on do not use one short word but instead use several.

Secondly, we have supplemented the options provided in browsers in respect of text size by adding some of our own.

Thirdly, we have similarly given a small number of colour choices for text and backgrounds that are known to help.

These choices are in line with advice offered on line by disability organisations.

Page Footers

The Footer section appears on almost every page and provides a ready means of getting back to the home page or the top of the page you are reading. A link is provided to our search facility.

Below that are the customary notices about copyright, who and what we are, a link to joining us, and the date and time the page you are looking at was last updated.
